The Criminal Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan, presided over by Judge Garik Abelyan, ordered the two-month arrest of former Member of Parliament and leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party, Gagik Tsarukyan, on July 7, 2026.

It should be recalled that on July 6, investigators from the Investigative Committee searched the mansion of former MP and businessman Gagik Tsarukyan and more than 70 other addresses linked to him for approximately 12 hours.

Later, the Investigative Committee issued a statement indicating that factual data had been obtained in one of the criminal proceedings being investigated by the Main Department for the Investigation of Economic Crimes and Smuggling. This data suggested that, with the organization of Gagik Tsarukyan, several individuals allegedly committed large-scale fraud and large-scale money laundering between 2022 and 2024.

Seven opposition parties and one civic association issued a joint statement condemning the actions taken against Gagik Tsarukyan and the searches conducted at his enterprises. According to the authors of the statement, the ongoing events constitute politically motivated persecution and a challenge to society as a whole.
