Matevosyan discusses COP17 agenda with China’s environment minister

Environment Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan met with Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China. During the meeting, the sides discussed the priority items on the COP17 agenda, with particular emphasis on assessing progress in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and intensifying joint efforts toward achieving the goals set for 2030.

They also touched upon opportunities for expanding Armenian-Chinese cooperation in the environmental sector.

The preparation for COP17 is of particular importance for the Armenian side, as biodiversity conservation issues are being viewed in a broad regional context. Expanding cooperation with China could provide a serious impetus not only for environmental but also for economic projects related to green technologies and carbon emission reduction.

For Armenia, as a small country, such partnerships often carry greater value than they appear to at first glance. Coordinating a position on biodiversity conservation on international platforms could strengthen the country's voice at COP17, where the decisions under discussion will have a long-term impact on environmental policy.

Whether this meeting will translate into concrete programs and agreements remains to be seen. For now, one thing is clear: in the bilateral agenda, the environmental topic is becoming more practical than formal.
