US President Donald Trump has proposed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travel to Moscow to hold peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. This unexpected initiative by the American side was reportedly met with a quite negative reception from the Ukrainian delegation.
The Ukrainian president sharply rejected the option of traveling to Moscow, and according to sources familiar with his stance, the proposal caused serious displeasure for Zelenskyy.
Back on September 23, Zelenskyy stated that he was fundamentally ready to meet Putin in person, but responded to a question about the possibility of visiting the Russian capital rather harshly and humorously, noting that he could only go there "on a missile."
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed the situation, stating that trilateral negotiations involving Russia, the US, and Ukraine could take place in the near future. Nevertheless, the Russian side also confirmed that there is currently no clarity regarding exact dates or format for the meeting.
The situation surrounding potential talks between the US, Ukraine, and Russia highlights the depth of disagreements among the parties. While Washington is attempting to propose quick solutions, the idea of a meeting in Moscow remains politically unacceptable for Kyiv.
Zelenskyy's firm reaction underscores that Ukraine is unprepared to make concessions even under pressure from allies. Meanwhile, Russia's cautious statements indicate that the launch of negotiations in a trilateral format remains uncertain.
