‘They Didn’t Even Hold a Confrontation’: Davit Ghazinyan on His Case

Aravot — Davit Ghazinyan was released from the courtroom, and immediately upon leaving, he told journalists about an interesting proposal he made to the investigator during the detention hearing. The deputy from the “Strong Armenia” party said that he had set a condition: if the Anti-Corruption Committee issued a statement and apologized to him, he would be willing to remain in custody for two or four months, but the other side did not agree.

In the courtyard of the court, his supporters greeted him with applause, and Ghazinyan said he regrets that having obtained the status of a deputy, he had to be released from prison. The opposition failed to quickly bring about a change of power through elections, but Ghazinyan is confident that under the leadership of Samvel Karapetyan, “Strong Armenia” will be able to build a country where such scenes will no longer occur.

Regarding the act he is accused of—distributing electoral bribes—the deputy emphasized that during this time, not even a confrontation had been conducted. The court is reviewing the measure of restraint for Ghazinyan and the other defendants in the case; the prosecution is demanding a bail of one billion drams, accompanied by wearing an electronic device and a ban on leaving the country, while the defense is prepared to pay up to 40 million drams without additional combined measures.

In the case, the detention of defendant Arman Sargsyan was replaced with house arrest for three months, while the house arrest of Liliya Sargsyan and Arsen Melikyan was extended for the same period.
