Recent events at the Hovhannavank monastery complex have drawn sharp criticism from ecclesiastical authorities. The Aragatsotn Diocese has condemned the organization of a party on the monastery grounds as an act of blatant desecration and disrespect toward sacred spaces. Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan, Primate of the Diocese, had previously issued a long-standing ban on holding such events within church courtyards.
The issue, however, runs deeper; for approximately one year, the monastery has been occupied by defrocked clergyman Stepan Asatryan, under whose leadership invalid rites are being performed. The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin has stated that this situation paralyzes the monastery's atmosphere of prayer and causes concern among local residents.
The Mother See asserts that this situation has been made possible by the patronage and leniency shown by the authorities, which violates both laws and the rights of the Church. Ecclesiastical authorities are demanding that state bodies take immediate action to return the seized monastery to the jurisdiction of the Armenian Apostolic Church. At the same time, organizers and participants have been warned that such actions deprive people of spiritual blessings.
The situation surrounding Hovhannavank has long transcended mere administrative or intra-church disagreements. When a sacred site is transformed into a platform for secular gatherings, it signals a serious failure in governance or, worse, a deliberate refusal to restore the rule of law.
It is crucial to understand that this involves not only legal questions but also issues of public perception. The silence of the authorities allows a defrocked clergyman to continue his activities, remaining under the protection of the law for reasons that remain unclear. This could further deepen the tensions between the Church and state authorities in the near future.
