The father of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has appeared in a Florida court after being officially charged with possession of prohibited child sexual abuse material. FBI agents searched two storage units in the Los Angeles area that the 82-year-old had rented for nearly two decades, seizing around 78 items including photographic negatives, slides, and books. Following a brief court hearing, the court ordered him to be placed under house arrest at an assisted living facility in Florida with an electronic monitoring device, while the defendant has not yet entered a plea.
According to investigators, witnesses identified Markle in images where the man appears to be in his 30s or 40s, suggesting that the alleged crimes may have been committed decades ago. Earlier, Philippine police received permission to examine devices allegedly removed from his former home in that country, with four boxes containing computers, phones, hard drives, and videotapes handed over to law enforcement by his son. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have not commented on the arrest, but in October, the Duchess stated that she was deeply shocked by the emerging reports and expressed empathy for any potential child victims, while she has not maintained a relationship with her father since 2018.
This legal proceeding has drawn significant public attention given the defendant's prominent family ties. Although such investigations can take a lengthy amount of time, law enforcement actions underscore the importance of thoroughly examining digital and archival materials.
