Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has announced the downing and destruction of a US MQ-1 drone over Qeshm Island. According to the Corps, this is already the 16th American drone that has been intercepted.

A statement from the IRGC press service says the shootdown took place just a few minutes ago. The operation was carried out under the control of the country's unified air defense network and was conducted by the Corps' newest air defense system.

"A few minutes ago, the IRGC's newest air defense system, operating under the control of the country's unified air defense network, intercepted and destroyed the 16th American MQ-1 drone over Qeshm Island," the statement reads.

According to the IRGC, the downed aircraft belonged to the US Army and was from the MQ-1 reconnaissance-strike drone family. Aircraft of this type are typically used for reconnaissance and striking targets.

Qeshm Island has long held particular significance for Iran: it is located near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's oil shipments passes. Iranian military facilities are stationed there, and incidents involving American drones have been recorded in the area for years.

The number itself is noteworthy. If the IRGC's count is correct, this is not an isolated incident but a recurring pattern. However, there is an important nuance here: the Corps is presenting only its own account, and the American side's response is not currently known. Independent confirmation of the facts is still lacking.

Official statements about Iran's air defense capabilities should be viewed with caution; such reports often also carry a propaganda component intended for a domestic audience. On the other hand, if the shootdown did indeed occur, it is a serious signal of rising tensions in the region.
