Kamchatka's Shiveluch volcano has ejected an ash plume reaching up to 10.5 kilometers (approximately 6.5 miles) above sea level, according to the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT).
The eruption occurred at 08:05 local time. The ash cloud drifted approximately 65 kilometers (around 40 miles) northwest of the volcano.
KVERT reports that Shiveluch's eruption is ongoing. It is accompanied by intense steam-gas activity, with a new dome growing on the northern part of the lava dome.
Volcanologists warn that new ash emissions, potentially reaching up to 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles) in height, are possible at any moment.
Shiveluch has been assigned the red, highest aviation alert code. The volcano's activity poses a potential danger to international and low-flying aircraft.
