Polish President Refuses to Ratify Same-Sex Civil Unions Bill

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has refused to sign the "civil status" bill, 168.am reports. The legislation would have allowed for the legalization of same-sex unions in the country.

Nawrocki announced this in a video message posted on his office's X page, stating that he is exercising his presidential veto. The president also rejected the introductory provisions related to the law.

According to Nawrocki, these bills create a new formal institution that resembles marriage, granting the same rights without the corresponding marital obligations. The president noted that the Polish Constitution defines marriage exclusively as a union between a woman and a man.

As the guarantor of the constitution, Nawrocki stated he cannot approve decisions that would weaken the special status of marriage. He emphasized that marriage is under the special protection of the state.
