Following a closed and secret ballot held in parliament today, Vahagn Aleksanyan was elected Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. The candidacy of the deputy chair of the ruling Civil Contract party’s board received 62 votes in favor, while 27 deputies voted against it.
The opposition 'Hayastan' faction decided not to participate in the election. After the conclusion of the voting process, the newly elected deputy speaker himself closed the day's parliamentary session.
It should be recalled that the previous day, Hayk Konjoryan, who led the Civil Contract faction in the previous convocation of parliament, was also elected as a Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. As for the third deputy speaker position, under the law, it is reserved for the opposition. The 'Hayastan' faction had previously nominated Aram Vardevanyan for that post.
With this election, the ruling majority is strengthening its position within the parliamentary leadership by filling two of the leadership roles. These personnel shifts within the government serve as a clear signal regarding the priorities of parliamentary work.
A key question remains regarding developments surrounding the third deputy speaker position. The participation or absence of the opposition in this process will indicate the extent to which constructive work can be achieved in the legislative body, especially given that the opposition wing has already announced its candidate.
