How Glendale Has Evolved: An Interview with Elen Asatryan, the City’s First Armenian Female Mayor

3 Min Read

Newly elected Glendale City Council member and the city's first Armenian female mayor, Elen Asatryan, discusses the achievements of the Armenian-American community and the specific nature of the city's governance. Glendale's structure differs significantly from the Yerevan model. Each of the five City Council members holds equal rights, while the mayor's role is primarily representative and limited by a collective decision-making mechanism.

According to Asatryan, political processes in Glendale can sometimes be slow, which, while occasionally frustrating, is an integral part of democratic institutions. Among her priorities, she highlights the empowerment of women and girls, support for small businesses, and the development of urban green spaces. She emphasizes that access to social programs for immigrants is vital, especially during emergencies.

The Armenian community's position today is incomparably stronger than it was decades ago. While Armenians previously often faced discrimination, they are now represented in nearly all levels of the municipal government. This change is the result of a long and consistent struggle, made possible by the community's political activism and extensive voter registration programs.

At the same time, the city's security and development have led to an increased cost of living. To address housing issues, city authorities have accelerated the construction of affordable housing intended for both seniors and young working professionals. Elen Asatryan also addresses the issue of domestic violence, noting that the reality is deeper than statistical data suggests, so work continues toward combating it.

Glendale's experience shows that community success is not a coincidence but the result of a long struggle. The involvement of Armenians in local self-governing bodies has become not only a guarantee for protecting rights but also for social security.

It is clear that economic development also brings new challenges. The housing crisis and social vulnerability are topics around which the dialogue between the authorities and the public remains tense. It is interesting to observe how a new generation of politicians attempts to balance the growing demands of the city with the needs of the old community.
