Former Police Chief Vahe Ghazaryan Eyeing Defense Minister Post

2 Min Read

Former Police Chief Vahe Ghazaryan has not given up hope of returning to the state apparatus and is now attempting to secure the position of Minister of Defense. It is known that he is constructing a resort on land illegally privatized under his brother's name in Tavush. Regarding this plot located in the Dilijan National Park area, the prosecutor's office had sent a notice to the municipality instructing them to file a lawsuit to reclaim the community-owned land.

Since his resignation, Ghazaryan has maintained silence, voicing no criticism, and actively worked for the ruling Civil Contract (CC) party during the elections. He invites Nikol Pashinyan to social gatherings at every opportunity. Sometime ago, rumors in Ijevan suggested he wanted to be appointed director of the National Security Service (NSS). Now, with discussions surrounding the Defense Minister's potential resignation circulating, he has begun actively lobbying for this post.

Pashinyan has hesitated to dismiss Suren Papikyan due to the lack of a suitable candidate. Ghazaryan is attempting to negotiate with the Prime Minister to ensure the choice falls on him. Recently, he invited Pashinyan to his son's army send-off party with that precise long-term objective.

Attempts by former officials to re-enter the government system are consistently accompanied by demonstrations of political loyalty. This situation highlights the importance of personnel policy regarding high-level appointments.

Particularly in power structures, leadership changes can exert a significant influence on the future operations of the system. It will soon become clear how realistic such personnel shifts actually are.
