Heavy Rain Floods Basements Across Gyumri

Heavy rainfall on the evening of August 28 caused severe issues for residents of the Ani neighborhood in Gyumri, as floodwaters inundated basements at several addresses.

Starting at 8:16 PM, the Shirak Regional Operational Management Center received numerous emergency calls from citizens. Two fire-rescue units from the Regional Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Rescue Service responded promptly to the reported locations.

Using specialized motor pumps, rescuers carried out water removal operations across various addresses. As a result of these actions, approximately 125 cubic meters of water were pumped out from the basements.

The incident in Gyumri's Ani neighborhood highlights once again how vulnerable urban infrastructure remains during sudden, heavy precipitation. Although rescuers managed to respond quickly and discharge 125 cubic meters of water, similar situations recur regularly across various settlements.

This raises questions about the capacity of the city's drainage systems to withstand such sudden weather events. The flooding of basements, particularly in multi-apartment buildings, not only causes material damage to residents but can also impact the structural integrity of building foundations over the long term.
