Government Changes Drug Offender Registration Rules

1 Min Read

A draft government decision proposes amendments to the procedure for medical observation and registration of drug addicts, eliminating cases where they are removed from narcological registration on the grounds of being sentenced to imprisonment.

Under the current regulation, a person can be removed from the registry even when sentenced to just a few months in prison, without five years of medical observation and confirmation of stable remission, which allows the necessary examinations to be bypassed.

The draft stipulates that information on those sentenced to imprisonment will be forwarded to the relevant medical institution within three days, and their medical care will be provided in accordance with the procedure established by the government.

This change directly affects the integrity of narcological supervision, as it eliminates the existing gap that allowed automatic removal from the registry during the serving of a sentence.

It will soon become clear how this mechanism will be regulated in practice, once the draft receives final approval and enters into force.
