News.am — French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that the country has formally applied to the European Union, requesting the activation of the Civil Protection Mechanism due to widespread wildfires, with the situation remaining particularly severe in the Gironde department.
As part of European assistance, France will receive additional resources: two Canadair aircraft from Croatia, two Air Tractor planes from Portugal, as well as two heavy Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Earlier reports indicated that approximately 20,000 people had been evacuated due to the wildfire in Gironde, while a blaze in the southern Var department forced around 400 more residents to leave their homes.
