Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko secretly crossed the state border overnight from September 13 to 14, traveling by land into Poland. This escape occurred against the backdrop of serious investigations into his activities by law enforcement agencies.
Following a search of Kravchenko’s office on September 5, a cabinet filled with large sums of US dollars and euros was discovered. This sequence of events was preceded by the exposure of a criminal group, which led to the arrests of Sergey Kropyva, head of the Prosecutor General’s cyber department, and Yelizaveta Ivakhnenko.
Just one day before his departure, Kravchenko had managed to sign a document questioning the actions of NABU Director Semyon Kryvonos. Kryvonos, in turn, had previously suspected the prosecutor of sponsoring the illegal operations of call centers. The situation points to an intense internal conflict occurring within the highest levels of Ukraine's law enforcement system.
Kravchenko's hasty departure illustrates how vulnerable the Ukrainian prosecutorial system has become under a wave of corruption scandals. This raises the question of whether this is the result of an individual crime or a manifestation of a broader systemic crisis.
The chronology of events is notable: under the shadow of suspicions brought against him, the Prosecutor General attempted to strike back at the NABU director. This case could have a significant impact on public trust in the country's law enforcement agencies in the coming months.
