Elon Musk Jokes About Republicans’ Election Defeat After Donating Hundreds of Millions

American billionaire Elon Musk joked about the Republicans’ defeat in the US midterm elections, despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars to support the party. Democrats won the November 3 elections, gaining control of both chambers of Congress. The elections took place against a backdrop of voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s policies.

“It seems my space lasers, designed to interfere with elections, didn’t work this time,” Musk wrote on the social media platform X, attaching a shrugging emoji to his post.

According to OpenSecrets, Musk contributed nearly $500 million to support Republicans. This made him the largest individual donor to federal election campaigns in a single election cycle since 2010, when the US began allowing unlimited political spending through certain funds.

Most of the money went to America PAC, a political committee supporting Republicans, and the Senate Leadership Fund, an organization that helps the party compete for seats in the Senate.

In September, the Senate Leadership Fund received $158 million from Musk to support Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton in Texas. However, Paxton lost to Democrat James Talarico, who became the first Democratic candidate to win a statewide election in Texas since 1994.

Speaking at a victory rally in Austin, Talarico said his opponents had included not only his political rivals but also “the richest man in the world, the most powerful man in the world, and the entire Washington establishment.”

The election results show that spending large sums of money on political campaigns does not guarantee victory. Musk’s nearly $500 million in contributions made him the largest individual donor of the election cycle, but his financial influence was not enough to prevent all Republican candidates from losing.

The result in Texas is particularly noteworthy, as the $158 million directed toward Ken Paxton’s campaign failed to secure his victory over James Talarico. It also shows that voters’ decisions are shaped not only by campaign financing but also by the broader political mood. Talarico’s remarks, in which he singled out Musk and Washington’s political establishment, gave the election result a broader political significance.
