In recent days, a significant buildup of hundreds of trucks has formed on the Georgian side of the Red Bridge customs checkpoint on the Azerbaijan-Georgia border, one of the region's main freight routes, heading toward Marneuli.
This situation most adversely affects drivers engaged in international shipments, who complain that waiting at the border creates additional risks for the cargo they are transporting and increases their costs.
To eliminate the backlogs and resolve the situation, the relevant authorities of Azerbaijan and Georgia have already agreed to take joint steps, and the border crossing process is expected to be streamlined shortly, which would help avoid such congestion in the future.
This situation demonstrates how vulnerable the region's transit routes are even without emergencies, simply due to a lack of coordination in checkpoint operations. Although Azerbaijan and Georgia have announced joint actions, it remains unclear whether these measures will be temporary or whether long-term mechanisms will be introduced.
The economic losses for drivers are obvious, but a more important question is how this congestion will affect the supply chains of goods passing through the region, especially if such incidents recur.
