French law enforcement officers have foiled an attempted kidnapping targeting several high-profile individuals, including Real Madrid and France national team forward Kylian Mbappé. Following the prevention of the crime, an 18-year-old youth and his accomplice were taken into custody in connection with the case.
The 18-year-old suspect, named Clément, who has prior convictions for drug trafficking, violent robbery, and procuring, is suspected of planning a series of armed robberies and kidnappings between April and August 2026. Law enforcement officers arrested the perpetrators in late August in one of Paris's suburbs.
The ringleader gave instructions to his accomplices via phone from prison. Law enforcement found the addresses of 26 potential victims on the seized phones, including prominent business figures, show business personalities, and professional athletes, among whom was Mbappé himself.
On August 21, Clément was officially charged with organized armed robbery. During an appeal hearing on September 2, a prosecution representative stated that the defendant is also implicated in a new case involving a well-known rapper and a footballer. The suspects are currently in custody.
In October, the French national team will play Nations League matches against Italy and Belgium in Paris.
The fact that such large-scale crimes were planned from inside prison via mobile communication highlights serious security flaws within the French correctional system. The discovery of the addresses of 26 prominent figures indicates that the group operated in a coordinated manner with long-term preparation.
Notably, the 18-year-old organizer already had prior convictions for severe offenses. This incident once again draws attention to the personal security measures surrounding high-profile athletes and public figures.
