Erekli Gugava, a 33-year-old Georgian national, has been hit with serious charges in the United States. He is accused of participating in a $1.3 billion healthcare fraud scheme and money laundering. The Department of Justice has stated that this is one of the largest cases of its kind in the nation's history.

According to investigators, between February and July 2025, Gugava operated a Pennsylvania-based medical supply company called ND Medical Solutions. In just five months, the company submitted at least $1.3 billion in fraudulent claims to the Medicare program and private insurance companies. Insurers had already processed payments totaling approximately $6.5 million.

Gugava opened bank accounts, received the insurance payments, and then transferred the funds to offshore accounts controlled by the scheme's organizers. Authorities believe an international criminal organization operating out of Russia and other countries is behind the scheme, which has been dubbed "Operation Golden Fever."

To create the falsified documentation, the perpetrators used stolen personal data belonging to Americans, including the elderly and individuals with disabilities. Many victims only became aware of the fraud when they received statements indicating they had been provided with wheelchairs or other medical equipment they had never actually received.

Gugava fled the U.S. in July 2025 and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

The $1.3 billion fraudulent billing scheme highlights the vulnerabilities within the insurance systems of even advanced nations like the U.S. A key factor was the criminals' ability to exploit the personal data of unprotected citizens for months, while significant portions of the payments were processed without rigorous prior verification.

The international nature of the criminal network is also notable, as it extends beyond the jurisdiction of a single country. Recovering the funds transferred out of the United States and bringing the organizers to justice will be a complex process.
