Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee has announced that four people have been detained on charges of receiving bribes and aiding and abetting bribery. Among them are the head of the Constitutional Law Department at Yerevan State University’s Faculty of Law, who is suspected of receiving bribes, and the head of the Armenian History Department at the Faculty of History, who is suspected of facilitating bribery.
The individuals are constitutional law expert Vardan Ayvazyan and historian Edik Minasyan.
Law enforcement authorities have declined to provide further details, citing the interests of the preliminary investigation. It is not yet known under what circumstances the alleged incident took place or what information formed the basis for the charges.
The disclosure of the names of the two YSU department heads has drawn additional public attention to the case, as both individuals hold senior positions in different university faculties. However, their positions and professional reputations cannot, in themselves, confirm or disprove the suspicions against them.
So far, law enforcement authorities have disclosed only the nature of the suspicions and the number of people detained, declining to provide further details in the interests of the preliminary investigation. Consequently, it is not yet possible to assess the full course of the alleged incident or the potential roles of those involved. Further clarifications will be important in understanding the circumstances that gave rise to the case and the evidence on which the charges are based. Until then, it is necessary to distinguish suspicion from proven guilt.
