News.am — Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia has stated that the development of Soviet nuclear weapons in Sarov was part of a "divine providence." Sarov, also known as the former closed city of Arzamas-16, is historically linked to the Saint Seraphim of Sarov Monastery.
Speaking after a liturgy at the Holy Trinity Seraphim-Diveyevo Monastery, the church leader noted that the selfless work of the scientists and workers in Sarov allowed for the creation of weaponry that effectively halted the enemy's intentions to destroy the Motherland and enslave its people. The Patriarch is convinced that the fact that this center of nuclear power was established in the very place where Saint Seraphim prayed is by no means a coincidence. He also added that many physicists see a resemblance between scientific activity and the spiritual environment of the monastery.
Sarov was a key center for the Soviet nuclear program. It was in the secret design bureau located there that the first domestic nuclear developments were carried out in the mid-twentieth century, fundamentally changing the geopolitical landscape.
