French police are considering sabotage as a possible cause of a railway accident that occurred on Thursday evening. A train traveling from Rouen to Caen derailed, and the carriages were severely damaged, with three of them overturning.
A total of 44 people were injured in the accident. One of them, an 18-year-old girl, was airlifted to a hospital intensive care unit in critical condition.
Investigators found a damaged section of rail at the scene, which, according to the investigation, may have been deliberately damaged before the train passed through that section. For this reason, the sabotage theory is currently the primary line of inquiry.
A total of 130 firefighters and rescuers, as well as five emergency medical teams, took part in assisting and evacuating the passengers.
The most significant circumstance in the accident is the damaged section of rail found at the scene, as this fact is what makes the sabotage theory the primary line of inquiry. However, at this stage, it remains only a theory, and its confirmation or rejection will depend on the results of the ongoing investigation.
The scale of the accident also shows the extent of the rescue operation: 130 firefighters and rescuers, along with five emergency medical teams, were deployed to assist and evacuate the injured. Particular attention is required for the condition of the 18-year-old victim, who was taken to an intensive care unit.
