Armenia is celebrating Independence Day today, marking the 35th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia.
In the referendum held on September 21, 1991, an overwhelming majority of Armenian citizens voted to leave the Soviet Union and establish an independent state. The day later became Armenia’s Independence Day.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a video posted on social media this morning that he will deliver his Independence Day address in the evening from Republic Square.
Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II also issued a message on the occasion of the holiday. He said that under the current difficult circumstances, it is more necessary than ever to remain united and rally around the homeland to confront internal and external threats. The Catholicos also called for “building and brightening our country with selfless dedication.”
Messages of congratulations marking the 35th anniversary of independence have also been issued by President Vahagn Khachaturyan, National Assembly Speaker Ruben Rubinyan, other officials, political and public figures, and organizations.
This year’s messages marking the anniversary of independence place emphasis on different themes. The prime minister’s address is still pending, while Karekin II, in his already-issued message, focused on unity and the development of the country. This shows that within the framework of the same national holiday, the agenda of public discourse can take different forms depending on the speaker’s role and the institution they represent.
It is also notable that the day’s main political message has yet to be delivered. The speech expected from Republic Square in the evening will become the next major moment of the holiday, while the congratulatory messages already published are shaping the overall mood of the day.
