Vitamin D: An Expert on Key Facts and Common Misconceptions

2 Min Read

Endocrinologist Gayane Bayburdyan discussed the importance of vitamin D and common misconceptions surrounding it in an interview with Aravot.am.

According to the doctor, vitamin D is essential for bone strength, as well as the immune and nervous systems. Modern lifestyles, including working indoors and a sedentary routine, lead to a deficiency in this vitamin. The sun is the most reliable source of vitamin D; however, regular exposure is more important than intense tanning twice a year. The body cannot store this vitamin for long periods.

The vitamin is synthesized in the skin through the influence of ultraviolet rays. The efficiency of this process depends on skin color, age, and geographical location. Protective creams do not completely block synthesis, so their use to prevent skin cancer remains a priority.

Risk groups include children, pregnant women, and individuals with excess weight. The doctor advises against mass screening for vitamin D levels without justified reasons. Testing is only prescribed in the presence of specific symptoms or low calcium levels.

It is a common myth that vitamin D must be taken with vitamin K2 or consumed only before noon. It can be taken during meals for better absorption. Most importantly, one should not use high doses without a doctor's prescription. Overdose is dangerous and can lead to excess calcium in the blood, causing serious heart problems. Each patient requires an individual approach and the selection of the correct dosage.
