New York Post — U.S. President Donald Trump is interested in seeing FIFA head Gianni Infantino take on the role of UN Secretary-General. The two grew closer during preparations for the 2026 World Cup, and last December, Infantino presented the U.S. President with a special peace award.
In Trump's view, Infantino enjoys great respect globally and possesses a rare ability to unite people. The U.S. President considers this candidacy to be very promising compared to other potential contenders.
While it is unclear whether Infantino himself has any desire to take on the position, his appointment would involve a complex process. To become UN Secretary-General, he would need the approval of the 15 members of the Security Council, including the five permanent members with veto power. Only after that could the candidacy be confirmed by the General Assembly.
