Tobacco Use Among Men in Armenia Exceeds 50%, Leading to Cardiovascular Diseases, Cancer, and Fatalities: Anahit Avanesyan

In 2025, 3,639 people under the age of 65 died in Armenia from circulatory system diseases and malignant neoplasms, with the majority of the deceased—2,462—being men.

Cardiovascular diseases and cancer are among the leading causes of premature death. Tobacco use is one of their most significant preventable risk factors. For this very reason, legislation restricting the use of tobacco and nicotine products is not merely an ordinary ban, but a measure to protect human life and health.

In Armenia, the rate of tobacco use among men exceeds 50%. This directly translates into an increase in cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and fatal outcomes.

This is not just a healthcare issue, but a serious demographic and economic threat, as it affects the working-age population. Legislative bans and restrictions are an important step, but administrative measures alone cannot fundamentally change the situation. Without stricter control and changes in public behavior, premature mortality rates will remain high.
