The U20 Freestyle Wrestling World Championship continues in Bratislava. From the Armenian national team, only 125 kg wrestler Henrik Haykyan is continuing the campaign, who, starting his performance in the Round of 16, gained a confident advantage over a Bulgarian wrestler. This was followed by a much more impressive victory in the quarterfinals, where our athlete completely outclassed the wrestler representing Turkey with an unanswered score of 7:0 and confidently advanced to the semifinals.
Tonight, he will hold his most important bout. Haykyan's opponent will be the representative of Iran, Mohammad Nezhad, and it is with him that our wrestler will compete for the coveted ticket to the final.
Not everything is lost for the other Armenian athletes yet. 70 kg wrestler Davit Davtyan and 74 kg wrestler Vladimir Azaryan still have a chance to participate in the repechage bouts, but this requires only one condition: the opponents who defeated them must absolutely reach the final.
This result is remarkable in several ways at once. Achieving success in the super heavyweight 125 kg weight category always involves unique difficulty, as the competition here is extremely high. Haykyan now remains as the sole leader of our team, independently paving his way to the gold medal.
The upcoming match in the evening against the Iranian athlete will become the most important test of this championship. The Iranian wrestling school is known for its consistency and powerful physical preparation. The outcome of this bout will not only determine the finalist but will also greatly affect the overall mood of our national team.
At the same time, the possibility of repechage bouts continues to raise some hopes. The future fate of Davtyan and Azaryan now depends on the performances of the opponents who defeated them, which means that the championship may still have unexpected turns for the Armenian delegation.
