An extraordinary and striking natural phenomenon was recorded in Yerevan as lightning struck the Mother Armenia monument during a severe thunderstorm.
Gagik Surenyan, Deputy Director of the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center, shared a video of the incident on social media. The footage clearly shows a bright flash piercing the gloom and striking the peak of one of the capital's major landmarks.
While such events may appear dangerous, they are natural occurrences for tall and metallic structures. The monument is equipped with special lightning protection systems that ensure safety during such extreme weather events.
Lightning strikes are a natural occurrence for large stone and metal structures located on high ground, particularly during intense spring and summer thunderstorms. During these moments, ensuring the safety of historical and cultural monuments as well as the surrounding area becomes a key priority.
Standing at one of Yerevan's highest points, the Mother Armenia monument is constantly exposed to the natural elements. The proper functioning and regular technical inspection of its lightning protection systems are crucial for preventing potential damage from such strikes.
