Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air is expanding its geographic presence from Armenia, launching three new destinations from Yerevan. Speaking at a press conference in Armenia, Chief Commercial Officer Ian Malin announced that direct flights from Yerevan to Basel, Varna, and Valencia will be available soon.

In addition to the new routes, the airline has decided to increase the number of aircraft based at Yerevan's Zvartnots Airport. A fourth aircraft will be stationed in Armenia in December, enabling the carrier to introduce new routes and boost the frequency of existing flights.

The new flights will launch in phases. Starting December 18, flights to Basel, Switzerland, will operate three times a week, followed by twice-weekly service to Valencia, Spain, beginning December 19. Flights to Varna, Bulgaria, are set to launch on June 6.

Following the addition of the fourth aircraft on December 17, flight frequencies to Prague and Memmingen will increase. Services to the Czech capital will operate five times weekly, while flights to Germany will run four times a week. Currently, the airline operates flights from Armenia to 18 European destinations across 12 countries.

According to the company official, Wizz Air expects to approach 100 million passengers annually this year. The airline currently bases its fleet across 44 airports worldwide. A significant portion of its nearly 270-aircraft fleet consists of A321neo aircraft, which offer high fuel efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

The launch of new destinations from Yerevan and the expanded local base signal positive growth for the local aviation market. It demonstrates that Armenia remains a high-demand and financially viable market for the low-cost carrier.

Enhanced accessibility to European cities not only facilitates travel for local citizens but also stands to boost inbound tourism to Armenia. Such expansions typically heighten competition in the market, ultimately benefiting consumers through more affordable airfares.
