Azatutyun — The Prosecutor's Office has dropped the charges filed against Gagik Tsarukyan, which concerned tax evasion on an especially large scale. According to Tsarukyan’s lawyer, Erem Sargsyan, the decision was made on the grounds that the charges were unlawful.
Gagik Tsarukyan was turned away from Zvartnots Airport on June 9 and subsequently summoned by an investigative body. The charges were filed without the consent of the Central Election Commission. At the time, Tsarukyan was a parliamentary candidate, which drew criticism from human rights activists. Defense attorneys pointed out that the case has a statute of limitations of seven years.
Gagik Tsarukyan is currently in custody. He is accused of large-scale fraud and money laundering. Today, he was brought to the Investigative Committee under police escort for additional questioning.
