On August 21, 2026, criminal proceedings were initiated in Yerevan after a Ministry of Internal Affairs police officer and about twenty associated individuals brutally beat two investigators from the Investigative Committee in front of an administrative building, while also committing acts of hooliganism.
According to information released by the Investigative Committee, the police officer and two of his relatives have already been detained as a result of the incident. It was also revealed that the police officer was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the event.
Immediately after being detained, the police officer, realizing the impending criminal liability, submitted a statement through his defense attorney alleging that he had been tortured. Following this, the body conducting the proceedings organized a medical examination, which completely refuted the claims of violence.
Currently, urgent investigative and procedural actions are being carried out to clarify all the circumstances of the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
This incident raises serious concerns regarding the level of discipline and accountability within the law enforcement system, as such acts of violence involving public servants undermine public trust. Moving forward, it is particularly important to monitor how the preliminary investigation will proceed and whether all the guilty parties will be held strictly accountable by law, regardless of their position.
