Pig kidneys frozen down to minus 150 degrees Celsius and stored in a refrigerator for months have been successfully thawed and restored to function. Scientists reporting the breakthrough state this is the first successful experiment of its kind in global science.
Closely matching the size of human organs, these kidneys were transformed into a glass-like state using a special technology and remained in that condition for over a year. Following successful warming, evaluation in specialized devices, and transplantation into animals, the organs fully regained their color and produced urine, indicating normal function.
The results represent a massive leap forward for organ transplantation, though researchers must still determine whether the method can be successfully applied to humans.
This medical achievement could radically transform the entire process of donor organ preservation and transplantation in the future, as science had previously been unable to maintain viability over the long term through deep freezing. If further research confirms the technology's safety for humans, it could help avoid many complications caused by donor shortages.
