Azatutyun — Firefighters continue to battle wildfires threatening the French city of Bordeaux, and authorities have begun evacuating a growing number of residents from the city's suburbs. The southwestern region of France has been severely affected by these fires, driven by the extreme summer heat gripping several parts of Europe.
Spain has declared a national state of emergency, and a wildfire near Valencia has caused the death of an elderly man. Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave said the fire is located about 15 kilometers from the main city entry points, while French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez continues to describe the situation as "complex."
The Bordeaux region is known for its vineyards and is also a major transport hub for tourists visiting the Atlantic coast. Authorities have evacuated 220,000 people from southwestern France so far due to fires that broke out earlier this week, which have reached Cap Ferret, a popular resort in the Aquitaine region. This month, the average maximum temperature in Aquitaine has been 32.2 degrees Celsius, exceeding the 1961-1990 norm by 7.3 degrees.
