Zakharova: Claims About Metsamor NPP Are Attempts to Undermine Armenia-Russia Relations

2 Min Read

Russia views allegations regarding security threats at the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant as yet another attempt to damage ties with Yerevan and sow discord. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that such information maneuvers hinder the development of joint initiatives.

She emphasized that these actions promote Western destructive projects, which significantly lag behind Russian technologies. At the same time, the Metsamor NPP serves as the foundation of Armenia's energy system, producing approximately 30 percent of its electricity, which has ensured the country's technological progress and industrial development for many years.

In the modern world, as several European countries struggle to transition to renewable sources, peaceful nuclear energy remains a key factor of sovereignty. Closing the plant would inevitably increase the state's energy dependence on other countries, seriously harming the nation's interests.

The plant's reliability and high level of safety have previously been confirmed by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, and specialists are currently working actively to extend its operational life until 2036.

Discussions surrounding the Metsamor NPP have long moved beyond purely technical and energy-related spheres, becoming a subject of major political manipulation in the region. The plant generates a significant portion of the country's energy, and any rash decision could directly impact its economic independence. It is time to determine the extent to which these statements are based on real risks versus geopolitical struggle.
