Since the beginning of summer, wildfires in France have destroyed more than 25,000 hectares of land, BFMTV reports, citing the Civil Security Service.
Around 8,000 fires have been recorded across the country during this period. Rescuers describe the current season as exceptionally intense. The burned area is already twice as large as that of the same period last year. This figure also exceeds the data from 2022, when major wildfires raged in Gironde.
The situation has been exacerbated by extreme heat, drought, and strong winds. The head of the service described these factors as an "explosive cocktail" that is accelerating the spread of the flames.
More than 2,000 excess deaths have already been recorded in France due to the anomalous heatwave observed at the end of June. Experts do not rule out that this number may rise once complete statistical data is obtained.
