An Amazon Prime Air cargo plane veered off the runway during landing at Miami International Airport in Florida, US. The tragic accident left five people dead and five others injured with varying degrees of severity.
The incident occurred on September 6 at around 2:00 PM local time, when the aircraft arriving from San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, skidded off the track upon landing. The plane then collided with several nearby vehicles and burst into flames in an explosion.
Local fire services reported that the two pilots remained trapped in the cockpit for an extended period. Meanwhile, several passengers were also trapped inside the crushed vehicles. Out of the five injured individuals transported to the hospital, doctors evaluate the condition of three as extremely critical.
Amazon confirmed in an official statement that the aircraft, operated by 21 Air, was attempting a routine landing when the unexpected incident occurred.
Specialists are currently investigating all circumstances surrounding the crash. Experts are considering the possibility that the aircraft overshot the intended threshold before landing, as the safe touchdown zone usually lies within the first 300 feet of the runway.
The crash of a large cargo plane at a major international airport raises serious questions regarding both flight safety and the layout of areas adjacent to airports. Such incidents demonstrate that even with experienced airlines, technical landing errors or adverse weather conditions can turn into a tragedy within seconds.
Primary focus is now centered on the investigation, which aims to determine whether the cause was pilot error or a technical malfunction of the aircraft. The findings of the investigation could lead to a further tightening of safety regulations for cargo carriers.
